Every month has boats, but each season buys you something different. Before you book a Kauai sailing trip, pick what you want most: whales, a calm sea for the snorkel stop, or an early sunset over dinner.

If you can only choose one thing, choose the time of day before the month. The morning trip is the one with the swim; the evening trip has dinner and the light.

NOAA's Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary says you can see whales from shore and at sea from November through April. More than half the North Pacific's humpbacks spend the winter in Hawaiian waters, to breed and to calve.
One Na Pali sunset sail lists whales "in season" from December to April. Guests on the morning sail wrote of whales in January, February, March and April 2026. The morning boat spends the most time on the open sea, which gives you the most chances. The whales page has the distance rules.
The state's own calendar shows when the sea is kindest. DLNR allows kayaks on the Na Pali coast only from 15 May to 7 September. The rest of the year, it says, unpredictable sea conditions make paddling there potentially unsafe.
The raft tours that land at the old village show the same pattern. One raft operator says lunch is packed in winter, or on summer days too rough to land. For a catamaran, summer means a better chance of the snorkel stop and a smoother ride.
Operators name wind and swell, not rain, as the reasons they cancel or change a route. On a rough day the captain tells you at check-in. On Holo Holo's boats you can then go on the new route, rebook, or take a full refund.
The Lucky Lady may reroute to the south coast when conditions need it, and its listing gives no refund for a reroute. If the coast itself matters most, book early in your stay. Then a cancelled or rerouted day still leaves you time to go again.
Hawaii keeps no daylight saving time, so the clock never jumps. The sunset still moves by more than an hour over the year. At Port Allen the sun sets around 5:56 p.m. in mid-November and around 7:24 p.m. in mid-July.

These are the US Naval Observatory's figures for Port Allen, on the 15th of each month. The early winter sunsets suit families, because the boat is back sooner. In summer you eat later and come home after dark.
Mornings move too. The Lucky Lady snorkel cruise starts at 6:45 a.m. From November to March, the sun is not yet up when you check in.
In September 2026, Hurricane Lowell shut the coast down. DLNR closed the Na Pali park and Polihale from 4 September 2026, and on 28 September 2026 most Kauai state parks were still shut.
The boats stopped too. Kauai Sea Tours restarted the Lucky Lady on 21 September 2026. On 28 September 2026, Holo Holo Charters said its tours were still paused while it waited for a report on the harbour ramp and finished annual maintenance.
A storm can stop the boats for days or weeks: the Lucky Lady was out for more than two. If you travel in late summer or autumn, book the fare whose cancellation window suits you.
