Kauai Sailing Tours FAQs
Sailing, harbours, meals, age limits, seasickness, whales and refunds, answered from the operators' own listings and the state and federal pages. Planning one of the sailing trips on Kauai? The answers below settle most of what you need first.
Two answers matter more than the rest. First, what the boat does: a morning snorkel sail to the Na Pali Coast, a sunset dinner cruise to the same coast, or a short sunset cruise on Nawiliwili Bay that never goes there. Second, whether it sails. Only some listings promise time under sail, and only when the wind allows.
After that, it is the sea and the fine print. The trade winds and the swell decide the route, no fare refunds seasickness, and the cancellation window depends on where you book. The Na Pali trips all leave Port Allen Marina Center, and none of them lands you on a beach.
Do Kauai sailing tours use their sails?
Only some promise to. Holo Holo's Leila trips put up the sails when the wind is right, weather permitting, and other listings describe a sailing catamaran without promising time under sail. The Lucky Lady listings say catamaran and nothing about sails, and the Nawiliwili bay cruise does not sail.
Where do Kauai sailing tours leave from?
Every Na Pali trip leaves Port Allen Marina Center in Eleele, on the south-west shore. The 90-minute sunset cruise leaves Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor, next to Lihue, on the other side of the island.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. Every listing meets you at the harbour, and several list hotel pickup as not included. Drive yourself and allow time to park and check in.
How much is a Kauai sailing tour?
From $114 a person for the 90-minute sunset cruise on Nawiliwili Bay. The Na Pali sunset dinner cruises run from $222 to $263, and the morning snorkel sails from $233 to $292. Tips are extra on every one.
How long is a Na Pali snorkel sail?
Five to six hours at the harbour and on the water. Holo Holo sells a five-hour trip, and the Lucky Lady snorkel cruise runs five and a half hours from a 6:45 a.m. start.
How long is a Kauai sunset cruise?
Four to five hours to the Na Pali Coast and back, dinner included. The sunset cruise on Nawiliwili Bay lasts 90 minutes and does not go to Na Pali.
What is the minimum age?
Five on Holo Holo's boats, where children aged 5 to 12 pay a child rate. The Lucky Lady cruises take children from age 3 with an adult, and the bay cruise listing states no minimum.
Can I go if I am pregnant?
Not on a Na Pali trip: both operators turn away expectant mothers. The listings also warn off anyone with back, neck, hip or knee problems or recent surgery, because the ride can be rough.
What if I get seasick?
Take a remedy before you board, because no listing refunds for seasickness and the boats do not turn back early. Holo Holo sells remedies at check-in, and the crews look after anyone who is sick. The 90-minute bay cruise is the shortest time on the water.
Are food and drinks included?
On the Na Pali trips, yes: breakfast and lunch on the morning snorkel sails, dinner on the sunset cruises, with beer, wine and soft drinks, and mai tais on all but Holo Holo's morning sail. The bay cruise pours drinks but lists no food.
Can I cancel my booking?
Most listings refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Holo Holo's trips sold at the lower fare need 7 days' notice instead, and each card says which window applies.
Will I see whales on a Kauai sail?
Humpback whales are in Hawaiian waters from November to April, and the crews stop when they see them. No listing guarantees a sighting, and the Leila listing names dolphins and turtles as well as whales in season.
Do the catamarans land on the beach?
No. Only the permitted raft tours may land passengers on the Na Pali Coast, at Nualolo Kai, and Holo Holo says plainly that it does not land on shore. On a catamaran you see the beaches from the water.
Can a catamaran take me inside the caves?
No. The sea caves are entered only by the small rafts: Captain Andy's says its 24-foot rafts are the boats that go in, and Kauai Sea Tours sells its cave trips as raft rides. From a catamaran you see the cave mouths from outside.
Are tips included on a Kauai boat tour?
No. Every listing leaves gratuities out of the fare, so bring cash or a card for the crew.
Can I snorkel if I cannot swim?
Not on Holo Holo's boats, which do not let non-swimmers into the water, and one Lucky Lady reviewer who could not swim was kept out even in a life vest. Non-swimmers can stay aboard, or book a sunset cruise instead.
Is there a ticket for the Na Pali Coast itself?
Not for the water: the fare is the whole cost, plus tips. On land, entry to Haena State Park needs an advance reservation for visitors, and the Kalalau Trail beyond Hanakapiai needs a camping permit.
Why is the same Holo Holo trip cheaper in one place?
Holo Holo sells its morning sail and its sunset sail through two booking sites, and the fares differ by US$16 to US$18. The cheaper listing needs 7 days' notice to cancel; the other refunds up to 24 hours ahead.
When is the sea calmest?
The operators cancel and reroute for wind and swell, not for rain. DLNR allows kayaks on the Na Pali coast only from 15 May to 7 September, because the sea is unpredictable the rest of the year.
Does rain cancel a sail?
Rarely on its own. Wind and swell are what the operators name as reasons to change a route or cancel, and a light shower often passes while you are out.
What if the operator cancels?
You are offered another date or a full refund. Holo Holo says that when conditions force a change the captain tells you at check-in, and you can go on the changed route, rebook or take a full refund.
What is the south-coast reroute?
Kauai Sea Tours may send the Lucky Lady along the south coast instead of Na Pali when the ocean requires it. Its listings say a reroute is not refunded, so ask about the forecast at check-in.
How many people are on board?
Up to 41 on Holo Holo's Leila listings and up to 49 on the Lucky Lady. The other listings state no maximum.
Can I bring my own alcohol?
No. Holo Holo's liquor licence does not allow it, and on the morning sails the beer and wine are served only after snorkelling. The Lucky Lady bar serves over-21s only.
Do I need ID?
Yes, if you want a drink. Holo Holo checks ages before it serves alcohol, and the Lucky Lady bar is 21 and over.
Can I bring a cane or a walker?
Not on Holo Holo's boats, which do not allow canes, walkers, crutches or wheelchairs on board. Kauai Sea Tours asks anyone with mobility issues not to book, so ask before you pay.
Are the boats wheelchair accessible?
No Na Pali listing is. The bay cruise listing does not say, so call the operator before you book it.
Is there a restroom on board?
Yes on the Na Pali catamarans: both Holo Holo's snorkel sail and the Lucky Lady list restrooms. One reviewer found the toilet hard to reach with limited mobility.
Can I rinse off after snorkelling?
Yes. Holo Holo's morning sail and the Lucky Lady snorkel cruise both list fresh-water showers on board.
Is there a waterslide?
The Lucky Lady snorkel cruise lists one, and Holo Holo's morning sail describes a slide off the back of the boat at the snorkel stop. The sunset cruises have no water time at all.
What time does the morning boat leave?
The Lucky Lady snorkel cruise starts at 6:45 a.m. Other departure times are on your confirmation, so read it the night before.
Can I snorkel on the day I fly in?
Holo Holo asks you not to snorkel within 24 hours of a flight longer than five hours. Book the morning sail for your second day or later.
Can I use a full-face snorkel mask?
No. Holo Holo bans full-face masks and provides two-piece masks and snorkels with the rest of the gear.
Is the canyon road open?
Not on 28 September 2026: Kokee Road was closed until further notice, all camping on Kauai was closed, and every Kauai state park except part of Wailua River State Park was closed after Hurricane Lowell. That includes Waimea Canyon, so check the DLNR park notices before you plan a drive up.
How close can the boats get to whales?
No closer than 100 yards, the legal minimum for humpback whales in Hawaii. If you see a whale caught in a line, NOAA's hotline is 888-256-9840.
What should I bring?
A towel, reef-safe lotion sunscreen (spray is not allowed), a dry bag, swimwear or quick-dry clothes and your ID. The boats are barefoot, and on the sunset cruises you will get wet up front.
Will I see the Na Pali Coast on the Nawiliwili cruise?
No. It stays on Nawiliwili Bay and the Huleia River, on the island's south-east side. For Na Pali at sunset, the Lucky Lady and Leila sunset cruises leave Port Allen in the afternoon.
