Kauai Sea Tours runs Lucky Lady, a 60-foot catamaran with a sundeck up front, a shaded cabin and an upper deck. On a five-hour evening the choice of deck matters. The front is where the spray lands and the swell is felt most. The cabin keeps you dry, and the upper deck gives the widest view when the sea is calm.

Kauai Sea Tours' own site calls Lucky Lady a sailing catamaran. This listing says only "catamaran" and makes no promise about sails, so book it for the coast and the dinner, not for time under canvas. If sailing is the point, the Leila sunset dinner sail promises time under sail when the wind allows.

Port Allen to the cliffs in the afternoon

The boat leaves Port Allen Marina Center in the afternoon and heads west along the shore. The crew tells the coast's history and its legends as you go, and keeps watch for dolphins, turtles and, from November to April, humpback whales. None of them is promised, but a long evening on the water gives you plenty of chances.

Then the cliffs. The Na Pali Coast faces north-west, so late in the day the low sun lights the ridges from the side. You pass the valleys and the sea caves from the water. The boat does not stop to land anywhere, and it cannot: only permitted rafts may put passengers ashore on this coast. The whole trip is seen from the deck.

Dinner and the open bar

Dinner is served aboard, and the bar pours beer, wine and mai tais for guests 21 and over, with soft drinks for everyone else. All of it is in the $222 a person fare. Tips for the crew are not, so carry some cash.

No swimming on this one

This cruise carries no snorkel gear and makes no swim stop. If you want to get in the water, book a morning boat instead. If the sea is rough, the captain may take the boat along the south coast rather than to Na Pali. 7. Back at Port Allen. About five hours after you left; the trip ends where it began.

Finding the Kauai Sea Tours office

Kauai Sea Tours checks you in at its office, suite 2B in the Port Allen Marina Center, 4353 Waialo Road, Eleele. Drive to the far end of the complex, turn right, and park in the third lot on your left, the one with the Kauai Sea Tours sign. Then walk to the check-in desk inside the office. Your confirmation gives the time for your date.

Know before you go

• Expect to get wet up front. Wear swimwear or quick-dry clothes, and keep your bag in a dry sack.
• Take your shoes off. The boat is barefoot; the upper deck is rough underfoot.
• Bring lotion sunscreen. Reef-safe, non-spray only, plus a light cover-up for the ride home.
• Prepare for the swell. Take a remedy beforehand; there is no refund for seasickness.
• Check your health. No expectant mothers, and no guests with back, joint or mobility problems.
• Carry ID and cash. ID for the bar, cash for the crew's tips.
