How to Book a Kauai Sail: Prices, Check-In and What to Know (2026)

Three kinds of trip, two harbours

Search for a Kauai sailing tour and you get one list sorted by price. It mixes three different days out. A morning snorkel sail runs five to six hours with breakfast, lunch and a swim. A Na Pali evening runs four to five hours with dinner and a bar, and no swim. The bay cruise lasts 90 minutes, pours drinks and never goes near Na Pali.

The harbour is the choice people miss. Port Allen sits in Eleele, next to Hanapepe, on the south-west shore. Hanapepe is about 17 miles west of Lihue on Route 50, according to Wikipedia. The Nawiliwili boat leaves from Lihue's own harbour. Book a Na Pali trip and you drive west; book the bay cruise and you stay in town. Both harbours are on the Kauai sailing map.

Where you check in

At Port Allen, each operator has its own office in the Port Allen Marina Center. Holo Holo Charters is in suite 5A; Kauai Sea Tours is in suite 2B, at the far end, with its own parking lot. At Nawiliwili you board at slip 100, the one closest to the Coast Guard station, and parking is free. Your confirmation gives the check-in time for your date.

No listing includes hotel pickup, so you drive or take a taxi. Allow for the drive from Lihue Airport if you land the same day. Holo Holo asks you not to snorkel within 24 hours of a flight over five hours, so a morning sail the day you arrive is a bad plan anyway. The two cancellation windows

Most listings give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Holo Holo sells its morning sail and its sunset dinner sail on a second booking site too, and there the window is 7 days. The fare is lower on that site, so the trade is plain: save about $16 to $18 and give up six days of flexibility. Read the window on the booking page before you pay.

Holo Holo's own terms add a wrinkle for groups. Parties of 10 or more need 72 hours' notice for a refund, not 24. If the operator cancels for weather, you get a new date or a full refund. If the captain changes the route at check-in, Holo Holo lets you continue, reschedule or take a refund.

The rules on board

The boats set their own rules, and most are the same across the harbour. You board barefoot. Spray sunscreen is banned on Holo Holo's boats; Kauai Sea Tours asks for reef-safe lotion too. You cannot bring your own alcohol. Staff check ID before they pour, and on Holo Holo's boats beer and wine come out only after the swim.

• No expectant mothers on any Na Pali boat.
• No mobility aids on Holo Holo's boats: canes, walkers and wheelchairs stay ashore.
• Non-swimmers stay aboard on Holo Holo's snorkel stop.
• Two-piece masks only: full-face snorkel masks are not allowed.
• Back or joint problems: every Na Pali listing advises against booking.

How long to allow

A morning sail takes most of your day once you add check-in and the drive. A Na Pali evening takes the afternoon and the evening, and you often drive back after dark. The bay cruise fits between dinner and bed. If you want both a morning and an evening, book them on different days: nobody enjoys a second five-hour trip after the first.

When to go

Humpback whales winter here from November to April, according to NOAA's sanctuary. The calmest sea is harder to pin down, but the state gives a hint: it lets kayaks paddle the coast only from 15 May to 7 September, because the sea is unpredictable the rest of the year. Five mistakes first-time visitors make

• Booking the bay cruise for Na Pali. It stays on the east side. Read where the boat goes before the price.
• Reading 7 days as 24 hours. The cheaper Holo Holo listings need a week's notice.
• Bringing a four-year-old to Holo Holo. The minimum is 5, and the crew enforces it at the dock.
• Expecting to step ashore. No catamaran lands; only permitted rafts put people ashore, at one beach.
• Packing spray sunscreen. Bring lotion, and a towel and a light jacket too.
