A Port Allen Sailing Day on Kauai's West Side, Hour by Hour
A Na Pali trip fills half a day, and the other half is yours. This guide plans a Kauai sailing trip from the west-side harbour, hour by hour, so the boat and the land fit together. It covers a morning boat, a sunset boat and the east-side bay cruise.
How does a morning-sail day run?
It starts in the dark for part of the year. The Lucky Lady asks you to check in at 6:45 a.m., and from November to March that is before sunrise at Port Allen, so you drive there with your headlights on. Holo Holo gives its check-in time on your confirmation.
Breakfast is served on the way up the coast. Then comes the Na Pali Coast from the water, a reef stop with gear and instruction, and lunch on the way back. You are ashore again around midday, salty and tired, with the afternoon ahead of you.
Keep that afternoon slow. A shower, a late lunch in Hanapepe and a rest suit most people better than a second big outing.
How does a sunset-cruise day run?
The other way round. The morning is free, and the boat takes your evening. The Lucky Lady meets you at Port Allen in the afternoon, and Leila's time is on your confirmation. Both move their start with the season, because Hawaii keeps no daylight saving time.
Sunset at Port Allen falls around 5:56 p.m. in mid-November and 7:24 p.m. in mid-July. You eat dinner on board as the light goes, and you are back at the harbour after dark. Plan to drive to your hotel at night.
What time should you be at Port Allen?
Early enough to park and check in without a rush. The marina is a working harbour with several operators, each with its own office: Holo Holo in Suite 5A and Kauai Sea Tours in #2B. The Kauai Sea Tours office asks you to park in the third lot on your left, marked with its sign.
Read your confirmation the night before for the exact time, and allow for traffic on Route 50. The visitors guide has the check-in rules for each operator.
What is there to do after the morning boat?
Hanapepe is next door, across the bay from the marina. Its name means "crushed bay" in Hawaiian, and it is one of the few Kauai towns that sugar plantations did not create. A walk and a late lunch there are the easy follow-on to a morning at sea.
Waimea town is six miles further west on Route 50. Past it, Polihale State Park sits at the end of a dirt road that DLNR says can flood, and that rental companies may not allow. Our page of things to do ashore has the detail on each.
Is the canyon road open?
Check before you plan around it. On 28 September 2026, DLNR said Kokee Road was closed until further notice, all camping on Kauai was closed, and every Kauai state park except part of Wailua River State Park was closed. That closes the drive up to Waimea Canyon and Kokee for now.
Even before the storm, the main canyon lookout had been closed for safety works since July 2025. The upper lookout at Puu o Kila reopened in January 2026. When the road reopens, the canyon suits the morning of a sunset-cruise day, with a wide margin for the drive back.
What should you do before a sunset cruise?
Spend the morning near your hotel, or on the beach, and eat a light lunch. Dinner is on the boat, so there is no need for a big meal.
Pack a layer for the ride home after dark, and a towel, because the front of the boat takes spray. Leave the afternoon's drive with room to spare: a missed check-in is charged in full on the Lucky Lady.
Can you sail twice in one day?
On paper, yes: the morning boats are back around midday, and the sunset boats leave in the afternoon. In practice it is ten hours at sea, two check-ins and a night drive, and most people would rather split the trips over two days.
If you want both, book them on separate days, with the morning trip early in your stay. That leaves you a spare day if wind or swell moves a boat. The post on morning against evening weighs the pair if you can only fit one.
How do you get to Port Allen?
You drive, because no listing includes hotel pickup. Port Allen lies on Hanapepe Bay, on Route 50, about 17 miles west of Lihue. From the east side, follow Route 50 west through the towns of the south shore to the harbour.
The bay cruise is the exception. It boards at Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor, next to Lihue and close to Lihue Airport, 20 nautical miles from Port Allen by sea. If you are staying on the east side, it is the one trip that does not ask you to cross the island. Our map of the harbours shows both harbours.
What if the sea cancels your boat?
Then the day turns into a land day, and a spare day later in your trip becomes the boat day. Holo Holo refunds in full if it cancels for weather. When it expects conditions to change the trip, the captain says so at check-in, and you may go, reschedule or take a refund.
The Lucky Lady may run along the south coast instead of Na Pali when the ocean requires it, and that reroute is not refunded. If the coast is the whole point for you, ask about the forecast at check-in before you board.
Have a land plan ready either way: a walk in the town across the bay, a beach near your hotel, or the canyon road once DLNR reopens it.
Which months change the plan?
Three things move through the year. The light: from November to March the Lucky Lady's 6:45 a.m. check-in comes before sunrise, and sunset falls as early as 5:56 p.m.. The rain: at Lihue, March is the wettest month, with about 5.6 inches, and July the driest, with 1.8.
And the whales, which are in Hawaiian waters from November to April. The best time to sail sets the months side by side, and the weather by month has the rain and temperatures for each.
Three west-side day plans compared
Here is each kind of day side by side. Pick the column that matches your booking, then fill the gaps.
| Morning snorkel sail | Na Pali sunset cruise | Bay sunset cruise | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before 7 a.m. | Drive to Port Allen; the Lucky Lady checks in at 6:45 | Sleep in | Sleep in |
| Morning | Breakfast on board, the coast, the reef stop | A beach near your hotel, or the town across the bay | Anything on the east side |
| Midday | Lunch on board, back at the harbour | A light lunch | Lunch near Lihue |
| Afternoon | The town across the bay, a shower, a rest | Drive to Port Allen and check in | A beach near the harbour |
| Evening | Dinner near your hotel | Dinner on board at sunset, back after dark | 90 minutes on the bay at sunset, then dinner ashore |
Whichever you book, put the boat early in your stay. If the sea cancels it, you want a spare day to go again rather than a flight home.
What should you pack for the whole day?
Pack once, for the boat and the land.
- For the boat: a towel, lotion sunscreen that is safe for the reef (spray cans are not allowed), swimwear on a morning boat and a dry bag.
- For the bar: an ID, because Holo Holo checks ages and the Lucky Lady bar is 21 and over.
- For the ride home: a light layer after a sunset cruise.
- Water: Holo Holo asks you to bring your own reusable bottle.
- Medicine: any EpiPen or remedy you need, taken before you board if it is for seasickness.
At the marina, Holo Holo asks you to park in its designated gravel lot, and Kauai Sea Tours points you to its own signed lot. Leave valuables out of sight in the car, and take only what you need onto the boat.
The boats are barefoot, so wear shoes you can slip off at the gangway. Our post on booking a sail walks through the rest.
